The Taklamakan Desert (Takla Makan) is a massive, cold sand desert located in the central zone of the Tarim Basin, Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of northwestern China. it is the world's second-largest shifting-sand desert, spanning roughly 337,000 square kilometers. The "Sea of Death": Its popular Uyghur name translated as "the place of no return" or "you go in, but you don't come out," reflecting its treacherous conditions for travelers. Like the Atacama but 3x larger, the desert is flanked by giant mountain ranges: the Tian Shan to the north, the Kunlun Mountains to the south, and the Pamir Mountains to the west. Sand dunes cover over 85% of its surface, with some dunes reaching heights of up to 300 meters. Sitting in the rain shadow of the Himalayas and far inland in Eurasia, it experiences extreme seasonal variation.
