Prairie Post Office Under Stormy Skies

Tim Trautmann @timtrautmann.com · Apr 20 United States Post Office, Shaniko, Oregon, US

The weathered yellow clapboard post office of Shaniko, Oregon stands resolute beneath a blanket of pewter clouds, its American and POW-MIA flags snapping in the high desert wind. The modest frontier building, with its sage green trim and red door, anchors a desolate stretch of the Shaniko Historic District where time seems suspended between past and present. Autumn pumpkins dot the wooden boardwalk while telephone poles stretch into the vast Oregon plateau, their lines cutting through the moody overcast sky that threatens rain over this ghost town remnant.
