The girl is from the Moken people. The Moken are an Austronesian ethnic group famously known as "sea nomads" or "sea gypsies". They traditionally inhabit the Mergui Archipelago between southern Myanmar and western Thailand, with notable communities along Thailand's Andaman coast - most famously in the Surin Islands National Park (Phang Nga Province), as well as Phuket and Ranong. A few are found in Trat province. Historically semi-nomadic hunter-gatherers, they spent most of the year living and traveling on traditional wooden boats called kabang, coming ashore mainly during the monsoon season.
Renowned for their extraordinary free-diving capabilities, spearfishing, and deep knowledge of the ocean. They gained international attention during the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, as their ancestral knowledge of the sea allowed many to spot early warning signs and flee to safety.
