Phanom Rung after a storm

Phanom Rung is an ancient Khmer temple complex located on an extinct volcano in Buriram Province, Isan, Thailand. Built between the 10th and 13th centuries, it is one of the most impressive and best-preserved examples of Khmer architecture in Thailand. Constructed primarily from sandstone and laterite, the complex was built as a Hindu shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva. Its position atop a volcanic hill symbolizes Mount Kailash, Shiva's sacred heavenly abode. The temple features a dramatic 160-meter processional walkway flanked by lotus-bud pillars, dynamic Naga bridges, and intricate bas-relief carvings—including the famous Phra Narai Banthomsin (lintel of the Reclining Vishnu).
Four times a year (twice for sunrise and twice for sunset), the sun aligns precisely through all 15 doorways of the main sanctuary simultaneously.
It lies along the Ancient Khmer Highway connecting Angkor Wat (in modern Cambodia) to Phimai Historical Park (in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand).
