Quiapo is a historic district in central Manila. The district is home to the dark wooden statue of Jesus Christ carved in Mexico. Millions of Catholic devotees gather here every January 9th for the annual Traslación procession. The historic public square directly in front of Quiapo Church, long used as a hub for political rallies, public gatherings, and fortune-tellers. The district is also home to the Manila Golden Mosque and a vibrant Muslim community. There are many markets and good Halal food. The district is close to the famous University of Santo Tomas, a private, Roman Catholic research university. If you are traveling to Manila the University and its architecture is special. It is one of the world's largest exporters of highly skilled nurses.
